My son is a pilot, and he was teaching me to fly.
During our lessons, he would ask me the same kind of question pilots are trained to ask:
I would look around and talk through the options.
Maybe that strip of road.
Maybe that open field.
Maybe a clearing nearby.
I was thinking about how we would get the airplane safely back on the ground.
But in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about something else:
Who would take care of my dogs?
If we had to land somewhere remote, it could be a while before we contacted anyone. My son had a roommate at the time. Someone would eventually notice if he did not come home.
I lived alone.
Nobody would know my dogs were home waiting for me.
